Cows Create Careers
Cows Create Careers is for secondary school students to promote education and career opportunities in the dairy industry. It was established by the Strzelecki Lions Club project in 2004 and continues with the support of Dairy Australia.
A local dairy industry professional, such as the vet, a dairy company field officer, an agronomist or a cheese maker, and local farmers work with the school to teach the students about the dairy industry. The students get to experience caring for heifer calves, which are on loan from the farmers. Educational activities are structured around feeding and monitoring the calves and at the end of the project students present a data show and produce a research poster and newsletter.
Through Cows Create Careers:
- students, teachers and parents are more aware of the variety of careers that the dairy industry has to offer (including service provision, manufacturing, dairy farming and research science);
- more students consider a dairy education path and dairy career;
- farmers and industry professionals expand their skills in communication and mentoring.
In 2007, Cows Create Careers was delivered to 2521 students in 77 schools across Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.
In 2008, the project is being delivered to over 90 schools in south-west and northern Victoria, Gippsland, South Australia, Hunter Valley and South Coast Tablelands New South Wales, and Tasmania.
