Cows Create Careers is a Dairy Australia and Regional Development Program project for secondary students from years 7 to 11. The project was initiated by the Strzelecki Lions Club in Gippsland during 2004.
Students learn about the dairy industry while caring for calves and working with farmers and dairy industry professionals, such as vets, dairy company field officers, agronomists or cheesemakers.
The project's educational activities are structured around science smorgasbords, and feeding calves and monitoring growth.
Students share their experiences and demonstrate what they have learnt by presenting a data show and a research poster. They also send thank you letters to the farmers and industry representatives, and create a newsletter as part of the school curriculum. The Cows Create Careers experience concludes with a presentation and awards ceremony.
Cows Create Careers has been delivered to 176 schools and more than 6389 students across Australia. Over 150 farmers and 150 industry advocates have volunteered their time and shared their knowledge of practical and professional career pathways in areas such as agricultural science, agronomy, dairy farming, nutrition, finance, manufacturing and dairy extension.
Through Cows Create Careers:
- Students, teachers and parents are more aware of career opportunities in the dairy industry (including service provision, manufacturing, dairy farming and research science)
- More students enter a dairy education path and dairy career
- Farmers and industry professionals develop their communication and mentoring skills
- The industry builds a network and promotes better career decision-making by students.
In 2011, Dairy Australia will deliver the Cows Create Careers project to 178 schools and over 6000 students across 20 dairying regions in Australia.
