Despite our first impulse to view dairy farming as land, cows and machinery, the essential foundation of a successful dairy farm business is its people, and each person needs their own plans for the future.
For some, the farm is an exciting learning environment and opportunity for wealth creation, whilst for others it is a secure job with defined tasks that remain consistent. We should all start our plans early, and we will all change our perspectives through life.
At some point in time the farm business management and assets will change hands as individuals want to leave the workforce or move on to seek opportunities elsewhere and others want to take on dairy farm ownership.
Where I have seen farmers manage this continual change well, it has had a very positive impact on their business and its people.
